Windows 10 password reset (from recovery media)

Forgot your Windows password? This method requires recovery media (USB / DVD) with command prompt access.

Requirements: Boot from external media with access to the Windows\System32 folder on the system drive.

1Boot from media and open command prompt. Locate the Windows\System32 folder on the system drive.
2Back up sethc.exe (rename extension to .bak):
>move sethc.exe sethc.exe.bak
>copy cmd.exe sethc.exe
3Boot Windows normally and at the login screen press 5× Shift — command prompt will appear.
4Use one of the commands below:
#Change password
>net user <username> <new_password>
#Activate account as administrator
>net user <account_name> /active:yes
#Add to administrators group
>net localgroup Administrators <account_name> /add
#Create new account
>net user <username> /add
